With the Olympic games less than forty days away, the preparations we have seen so far this year in Beijing are rising to a fever pitch. Today, the first of 500,000 Olympic volunteers have hit the streets, manning tourist information booths to help visitors to the city. The subway system finally has modern ticketing devices common in Shanghai and Hong Kong; there are now also security checks in all 93 stations. Taxis, long the focus of scrutiny by the authorities, have noticeably improved, in terms of cleanliness and service quality. 10,000 artists from all over the world have gathered in the capital for one of the largest arts festivals in the history of Beijing.
