What is China's attitude towards agricultural biotechnology?

China is now a leading in agricultural biotechnology research and development. However, there has recently been a significant policy shift in attitudes towards agricultural biotechnology. A "slow down" policy has been imposed on commercializing transgenic food crops with the implementation of a bio-safety regulation in June 2001. The regulation requires now requires the approval of genetically modified crops and foods.
