This week’s China Law Digest focuses on the port city of Tianjin. Long overshadowed by its neighbor Beijing, Tianjin municipality has quietly created an atmosphere hospitable to investors and businesses seeking good transportation infrastructure, good environmental conditions, and good governance.
On May 30, 2008, Tianjin municipality’s new information disclosure rules took effect in order to promote government transparency and effective city administration. The new regulations are among the first to be passed in support of the Regulations of the People’s Republic of China on Open Government Information, which took effect on May 1, 2008.
Tianjin’s increased emphasis on good governance supports the pioneering incentives that the city has supported since the 1980’s. Tianjin is home to the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area, founded in 1984 and home to more international businesses than all of Shanghai. This year, Tianjin has announced the establishment of the Sino-Singaporean Tianjin Eco-City, a project dedicated to reclaiming wasteland and providing a national model for sustainable development.
Tianjin’s innovative government policies and projects make it an important prospective site for any investor seeking to do business in China.
