First Asian Biotech Summit to be Held in Beijing
The first Asian Biotech Summit, aiming to promote the commercial application of the latest biological technology, will be held in Beijing in June this year.
Co-organized by the Pacific Rim Forum and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, about 500 participants from the region's industries, institutions and government bodies will take part in the summit.

World Bank and Britain To Join China In Fight Against TB
Two million Chinese people could be saved from tuberculosis and more will be prevented from infection in the next seven years thanks to a TB control program jointly launched by China, Britain and the World Bank.
The program, mainly financed by a US$ 104 million loan from the World Bank, will offer free diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis in 16 of China's 31 provinces to over 680 million people.

AIDS Patients In Guangzhou Increased 80%
The Guangzhou-based Nanfang Daily reported that the number of AIDS patients in Guangzhou is increasing at an average of 80.64% a year. Last year alone, 212 HIV positive cases were reported in the southern Chinese metropolis, or a 128% increase. The municipal government has stated that it will take active measures to check the spread of the fatal disease.

Deputy Urges More Action Against AIDS
The first AIDS-prevention proposal ever presented by a National People's Congress deputy was put forward at the Fifth Session of the Ninth National People's Congress in Beijing this March. He said that reading a recent newspaper article on an AIDS patient moved him to put forward the proposal.

European Pharmaceutical Companies To Enter China
A meeting promoting the health science and technology industry in China was recently held in Frankfurt.
A survey at the meeting showed that there are increasing numbers of European pharmaceutical companies that consider China a strategic base for long-term development. Representatives from more than 70 pharmaceutical companies from Germany, Britain, France, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the United States were present at the meeting.

German Pharmaceutical Company To Open Factory in Shanghai
The world's leading medicine manufacturer, German-based Boehringer Ingelheim, plans to set up a Sino-German joint venture, Boehringer Ingelheim Shanghai Pharmaceuticals Co Ltd., in Pudong, Shanghai.
The new factory will be a core base for Boehringer Ingelheim to supply medicines and chemical re-agents to China. It is hoped that the joint venture will help the German company in its expansion efforts in the Chinese mainland and strengthen its production network in Japan, Indonesia, South Korea and Taiwan.

First Ovary Transplant Successful in China
The first ovary transplant operation was conducted in east China's Zhejiang Province and gave the patient a second chance at a normal life.
The China Daily reported that Tang Fangfang, 34, the recipient of the ovary, was discharged from the hospital after recovery on Monday. "We have never performed such an operation before, and we are glad we did it," said Zheng Wei a professor at the Second Affiliated Hospital at Zhejiang Medical Science University, where the operation was conducted on March 5.
He added that such operations had only been performed on animals before. Doctors said she needed an ovary transplant and her sister was fortunately a match.
"This is a very unusual case because such matches usually only exist among twins," Zheng said. He added "the newly planted ovary is working properly in Fangfang's body now. "
Experts said that this operation is comparable to the "test-tube baby" in regards to reproductive surgery. It is hoped that more operations will be performed on women who are unable to have children because of cancer treatment.
