China Recognizes the Danger of Sexual Transfer of AIDS

The number of new AIDS cases in China recorded in the first nine months of 2002 has already exceeded the total number of cases reported in all of last year.

5,616 new cases were officially reported, raising the total number of known AIDS cases in China to 28,133. However, experts believe the number to be closer to around 600,000 and that by 2010, the number of infected Chinese people could be as high as 20 million.

"This is not a sanguine picture. The infection keeps rising in a quick manner," Vice Minister Yin Dakui said.

Health officials have said that although the use of used syringes is still the most common method of spreading the disease, the rate of homosexuality is "alarming" and sexual transmission is likely to overtake IV drug use as the major cause of infection.

Vice Minister Yin said "We must pay important attention to the spread of AIDS through our country's homosexual community and cannot be lax in strengthening education among the high-risk homosexual community."

It was reported that approximately 10,000 of the estimated 600,000 HIV/AIDS carriers have been infected through homosexual activities.

However, because only 28,133 cases have been officially reported in China since 1985, the official numbers of AIDS-related deaths is only 641.

Just this year, Chinese health authorities have admitted homosexuality is not a mental disease, and there has been increasing general acknowledgment of the sexual practice.

Zeng Yi, an AIDS researcher at the China Academy of Social Sciences said that although "shared syringes used for drug use remain the major cause of AIDS in China, the major mode of transfer may become sexual transfer as seen in developed nations presently."

UNIDO and Bio-Medicine Park to Build Medicine Research Center

Liuyang Bio-Medicine Park and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) have agreed to cooperate in the building of an international medicine research center in the central China province of Hunan.

The two sides signed an agreement in mid-October, making the project the first medicine industrial park with which UNIDO has become involved in China. It is also the first time that there has been an agreement between China's pharmaceutical industry and a United Nation's organization.

The province of Hunan is one of China's five leading producers of medicine. It is ranked second in the country according to natural medicinal reserves.

The cooperation between UNIDO and Liuyang Bio-Medicine Park, established in October 1998 and home to 31 medicine-related businesses, is hoped to facilitate communication and market penetration of Chinese and international medicine companies in the local and international market.

U.S. Summit Company and Matritech to Distribute Cancer Tests in the PRC

Matritech Selects U.S. Summit Company To Distribute BladderChek Cancer Test Throughout People's Republic of China;

Matritech Inc. recently announced an agreement with the U.S. Summit Company to supply its BladderChek cancer detection product to Chinese hospitals and pharmacies.

The recent move is an extension of the agreement between the U.S. Summit Company and Matritech signed earlier this year for exclusive distribution rights in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.

U.S. Summit, one of the largest Asian medical distributors with annual sales of more than $300 million, is also one the exclusive distributors for Merck and American Home Products. Matritech is one of the leading developers of proteomics-based diagnostic products for the early detection of cancer.

Stephen Ip, Matritech vice president for Asia said "The People's Republic of China is a very important market for Matritech, and U.S. Summit is an excellent partner that understands the Asian market. As part of our agreement, U.S. Summit has developed an impressive marketing plan for NMP22 BladderChek and is committed to obtaining Chinese government SDA approval for the product."
