UK Trials Traditional Chinese Medicine for Alzheimer's Disease and Pelvic-pain Remedy

British scientists are turning to traditional Chinese medicine and using extracts from sage and other plants to develop new treatments for Alzheimer's disease and pelvic pain.

Researchers from Oxford Natural Products (ONP) hoped to begin a clinical trial early next year of a new treatment for menstrual pain based on three Chinese plants.

Eighty women will be selected for the study that will test the ONP remedy. Two-thirds of women suffered from menstrual pain and 75% of them found the symptoms disabling.

It is believed that the herbal treatment will act as a muscle relaxant but without many of the side effects of currently available drugs for pelvic and menstrual pain.

A professor of Middlesex University is taking a similar approach to developing a potential treatment from Alzheimer's from sage extract.

Action Plan for Drug Inspection in China

The State Drug Administration (SDA) of China issued an action plan for drug inspection, targeting drug manufacturers, drug trading firms and health organizations, which have drug quality problems.

The China National Institute for the Control of Pharmaceuticals & Biological Products and provincial drug inspection institutes will conduct the sampling inspection.

The SDA is strengthening the administration of imported drugs, and the quality of 100 imported drugs in 2000 will be sampled and examined.

Ministry of Health Issues Scheme for Venereal Disease Treatment

Chinese Ministry of Health has recently issued the Treatment Standards and Recommended Scheme for Venereal Disease, guiding medical treatment for the third infectious disease in China.

There are 8.16 million Chinese suffering from venereal disease, and it is placed third, among the infectious diseases, after diarrhea and hepatitis. Medical schools in China did not offer a course on the treatment of venereal disease, therefore many doctors are unable to diagnose and treat such patients properly.

The old scheme promulgated by the Ministry of Health in 1991 has become insufficient, compared with the latest medical development. The new scheme focuses on 8 venereal diseases, including syphilis and clap.
