In 2001, China instituted new requirements aimed at improving reporting transparency and to stem the widespread market manipulation in its stock markets. This has brought regularity to China's domestic securities markets, which, at the end of 2001 had 1,160 listed companies with a market capitalization of US$ 525 billion.
