Merger of United Airlines and Continental Airlines Inc. cleared
On July 27, the European Commission cleared the merger of the United Airlines and Continental Airlines Inc, making the United Airlines the world largest airline company.
According to the investigation undertaken by the administrative authority on the anti-monopoly matters of the European Commission, there are few competition overlaps between the two airlines on their European routes, and the merger will have limited influence on the cargo business. It is claimed that the deal won’t bring any threat to the competition of the European market, and the application is thereby approved.
The deal of the two airlines has been a public focus since its announcement in May. The United Airlines and the Continental Airlines Inc, rank 4th and 6th in respect, and the airline capacity of the joint company may reach 21% of the American market, 7% of the global market, which means the combined company will exceed the Delta Air Lines, Inc. and become the world’s largest airline.
