Cooperation of Google and Yahoo Japan is not monopoly?

Issues have been raised recently about the cooperation of Google and Yahoo Japan suspected of violating the Anti-monopoly Law in Japan.

According to reports from Japan in 28 July, authorized government officer has expressed in a press conference that Yahoo Japan and Google’s cooperation over search service and advertising is based on separate running of business, which is not a violation of Anti-monopoly Law.

However, earlier report showed that Yahoo Japan has announced in its quarterly statement about changing its self developed search system to Google’s and applying other Google technology. And if certain agreement is reached in between, it is likely of violating the Anti-monopoly Law since the market share of Yahoo Japan is over 50% and Google being 30%.

The strongest opposite voice comes from Microsoft, as its chief counselor Brad Smith says, “The Google and Yahoo cooperation settles Google’s monopoly position in search service and advertising field in Japan. It means there is no competition here.”
