Located on the east coast of China, Jinan is the capital city as well as the political, economic, cultural, scientific and technological, educational and financial center of Shandong Province.
With a history of more than 2600 years, Jinan is one of the essential birthplaces of Chinese civilization. Chengzi Cliff, located in eastern Jinan, is the site where the Longshan Civilization (4600—4000 years ago) of the late Neolithic Age was founded. Also at this site, about 200,000 square meters of China’s oldest city relics were also discovered. Jinan has served as an important center of local government since the Qin dynasty and has served as the capital of Shandong Province since the Ming and the Qing dynasties.
More recently, foreign trade and international business has developed at a dramatic pace. In 2006, imports and exports added an additional USD 4.389 billion to the local economy, an increase of 16.7% compared with the previous year. Currently, exports are at USD 2.439 billion, an increase of 37.2% and imports are at USD 1.95 billion US dollars.
