Hefei is the capital of Anhui province, a province of rugged mountains and flat plains. Often overshadowed by its neighbors Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang, Anhui is still somewhat of an economic backwater. However, foreign investors are increasingly attracted to the province due to its cheap labor and manufacturing costs.

Hefei plays an important role in China’s national research and development with has three national laboratories, second only to Beijing. The National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory and the Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Microscale are both administered by the University of Science and Technology of China. The National Laboratory for Nuclear Fusion is administered by the Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences, Institute of Plasma Physics.
