Capital of Fujian province and situated on the north bank of Fujian’s largest river, the Min river, Fuzhou has close ties to both interior mainland Chinese provinces and abroad. The island of Taiwan lays just 180 km from Fujian’s coast and is the ultimate source of a considerable portion of foreign direct investment in the region.
Fuzhou’s economy has grown considerably since 1949. Although Fuzhou itself is no longer accessible to seagoing ships, the nearby Luoxingta anchorage and another outer harbor at Guantou on the coast of the East China Sea provide access to Fuzhou. Currently, the primary exports are timber, fruits, paper, and foodstuffs.
Some of Fuzhou’s primary industries include steel production, industrial chemicals, food-processing, timber-working, engineering, papermaking, printing, and textile industries. In addition, Fuzhou is famous for its lacquer and wood products as well as its handicrafts.
