Capital of northeast China’s Jilin province, Changchun is a major regional manufacturing base. Noted for its transportation equipment industry, Changchun produces approximately one half of China’s passenger rail equipment output. Changchun also manufactures substantial portions of China’s automobiles.
Changchun is also noted as a center of automobile research and development. China’s first locally-engineered car was born at the Changchun First Automotive Works (FAW). In order to promote its exposure to the international automobile industry, Changchun hosts the annual Changchun International Automobile Fair.
In addition to its manufacture of transportation equipment, Changchun also manufactures machinery, electronics, optics, medicine, textiles, metallurgy, and building materials. As part of the Jilin Maize Belt, Changchun produces several million tons of maize, soybean, paddy rice and sorghum per year.
